"Know Your Customer" Requirements
The awkening of the U.S. Government and the banking industry to the threat of global terrorism after the 9/11 catastrophe has meant that, among other things, a great deal more care would be taken regarding the international movement of funds. While a few rogue jurisdictions have ignored the global call for more care in acquiring clients, those which wish to maintain their international reputation have implemented various levels of "Know Your Customer" legislation. However, in spite of this, they have not lowered their barriers to ennquiry by other governments or private parties. In other words, KYC guidelines confer an obligation on the bank to understand their clients but they do not require that they change their realtionship with the outside world in relation to what they reveal about their clients.
