GENERAL
Nevada, is one of the fifty U.S. states but in many ways it is a state with a difference. It is a highly entrepreneuria and the government minimizes the barriers to startups not in the protected areas related to gaming and travel. Its location adjacent to California makes it an easy destination for millions of travellers who make a beeline for the attractions of the Tahoe, Reno and Las Vegas whenever they have a chance. Las Vegas alone receives nearly forty million visitors each year, half of them arriving by land and half by air. Las Vegas is also one of the fastest growing metropolitan areas of the United States creating tremendous opportunities for businesses, real estate investment and as a place to live.
POPULATION
The population grew by an astounding 66% between 1990 and 2000 and is now estimated to be about 2,100,000 . As with the United States as awhole the White population is about 75% of the total, but the ratio of African Americans is only about 6.8 percent, half the national average with the difference being made up by a higher than average number of Hispanics and Native Americans. There is a small but rapidly growing population of persons of Asian descent. Overalll the population is slightly younger than the national average and the median income is slightly higher than the national average. Sixty percent of homes are owner-occupied and forty percent are occupied by renters. This reflects on the large number of transiets that seek and find employement in the Gaming and related industreis.
POLITICAL STRUCTURE
In theory Nevada is a democratic state with an elected governor and Legislature. The legislature is composed of 21 senators and 42 assembly members. Neither political party, Democrat or Republican, acts with reference to its grassroots supporters and in fact actively isolates those who the populace put forth. The state appears to be ruled by the casinos and their money. The result is that only thrirty four perecent of the voters actually turn out to vote. There are organizations which are attempting to correcct this but progress is slow and spotty. Interestingly, the approach of the power structure is very similar to that seen in Singapore - the elite does everything possible to keep substantive issues out of the news and provide token rewards to lull the populace into passivity.
ENVIRONMENT AND ECONOMY
Although Nevada is predominantely desert, the Sierra Nevada mountains provide a beautiful alpine environment in the Northwest and the Grand Canyon provides unexcelled sightseeing possibilities in the south.Although farming, manufactureing and mining do contribute significantly to the economy, gaming and related services dominate followed distanly by trade and commerce and even more distantly by construction which accounts for less that one quarter than the revenues generated by gaming and its related service industries. Nevada is the nation's leading producer of gold, silver, and mercury. Petroleum, diatomite, and other minerals are also extracted. The state's manufactures include gaming machines and products, aerospace equipment, lawn and garden irrigation devices, and seismic monitoring equipment. Warehousing and trucking are also significant Nevada industries.
